This year’s Wiesbaden Biennale, a festival for theatre, art, music and film organised by the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden, follows an anti-colonial, queer-feminist and inclusive approach – without explicitly communicating this as such, however.
In keeping with this strategy, we worked with the curatorial team and scenographers to find ways to ensure that barrier reduction in the promotion and realisation of the event was not just a mere add-on, but rather a central standard and key communication principle from the outset.
For us, this included ensuring that the visual identity in terms of typography, contrast ratios and layout was designed for good readability and comprehensibility from the very beginning. The icons designed specifically for this project as part of the custom font also relate to a variety of needs and communicate information about the festival events and their locations. The text font is Olivia King’s »Inclusive Sans«, which is designed for accessibility and readability. The type designer has incorporated a »gender trouble star« (an extra-large asterisk) specifically for this project to support gender-inclusive language in German.
