We were invited by the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach to be part of the curatorial team for the exhibition »Same Bold Stories? Type Design by Women and Queers in the 20th and 21st Centuries’ and, in addition to designing the exhibition, we also worked on research, planning and realisation:
For a long time, the history of type design and typography was presented from a purely male perspective. Now, research in the field of type design is increasingly focussing on women, who were already active in type production at the beginning of the 20th century without really becoming visible.
As a curatorial collective, together we made it our task to research the Klingspor Museum's type-related historical collection for these female positions and to expand the historiography of type design by including their biographies and works. From the historical collection, we moved on to contemporary type design, where we looked at topics such as working conditions and cooperation, gender stereotypes in type, role models and accessibility through a diverse mix of international FLINTA* positions. Alice Savoie, Émilie Aurat, Golnar Kat-Rahmani and Nat Pyper are just some of the many names that were contextualised in the exhibition.
