KLINGSPOR INSTITUTE FOR TYPE DESIGN<\/span><\/h1>

The<\/span> city<\/span> of<\/span> Offenbach<\/span> has<\/span> a<\/span> rich<\/span> history<\/span> of<\/span> type<\/span> design<\/span>: as<\/span> early<\/span> as<\/span> the<\/span> early<\/span> 20th<\/span> century<\/span>, the<\/span> Klingspor<\/span> type<\/span> foundry<\/span> commissioned<\/span> renowned<\/span> artists<\/span> such<\/span> as<\/span> Rudolf<\/span> Koch<\/span> and<\/span> Peter<\/span> Behrens<\/span> to<\/span> design<\/span> new<\/span> typeface<\/span> families<\/span>. At<\/span> the<\/span> same<\/span> time<\/span>, the<\/span> Kunstgewerbeschule<\/span> (now<\/span> the<\/span> University<\/span> of<\/span> Art<\/span> and<\/span> Design<\/span> Offenbach<\/span>) was<\/span> producing<\/span> many<\/span> remarkable<\/span> works<\/span> of<\/span> typography<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

With this in mind, we founded the Klingspor Institute for Type Design in 2017 together with Marc Sch\u00fctz. The institute is a collaboration between HfG Offenbach and the Klingspor Museum, which has its origins in the former foundry. The institute's goal is to research the city's historical typographic heritage \u2013 specifically the archives of the Klingspor foundry\u00a0\u2013 and to make them more visible and accessible.<\/span> In addition to archival research and the digitization of the collection, the institute regularly organized courses, workshops, and lectures for HfG students. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The corporate typeface we designed for the institute references the connection between historical material and contemporary type design. It is inspired by the \u00bbOffenbach\u00ab typeface, a hybrid font designed by Rudolf Koch for the Klingspor type foundry in the late 1920s.<\/span> Starting<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> original<\/span> capital<\/span> letter<\/span> forms<\/span>, we<\/span> expanded<\/span> the<\/span> character<\/span> set<\/span>, transforming<\/span> all<\/span> curves<\/span> into<\/span> polygonal<\/span> segments<\/span>. Through<\/span> this<\/span> look<\/span>, which<\/span> is<\/span> inspired<\/span> by<\/span> low<\/span>-resolution<\/span> screen<\/span> previews<\/span>, we<\/span> make<\/span> reference<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> digital<\/span> materiality<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> new<\/span> typeface<\/span>. Like<\/span> the<\/span> institute<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> whole<\/span>, the<\/span> design<\/span> combines<\/span> historical<\/span> material<\/span> with<\/span> a<\/span> digital<\/span> approach<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

KLINGSPOR INSTITUTE FOR TYPE DESIGN<\/span><\/h1>

The<\/span> city<\/span> of<\/span> Offenbach<\/span> has<\/span> a<\/span> rich<\/span> history<\/span> of<\/span> type<\/span> design<\/span>: as<\/span> early<\/span> as<\/span> the<\/span> early<\/span> 20th<\/span> century<\/span>, the<\/span> Klingspor<\/span> type<\/span> foundry<\/span> commissioned<\/span> renowned<\/span> artists<\/span> such<\/span> as<\/span> Rudolf<\/span> Koch<\/span> and<\/span> Peter<\/span> Behrens<\/span> to<\/span> design<\/span> new<\/span> typeface<\/span> families<\/span>. At<\/span> the<\/span> same<\/span> time<\/span>, the<\/span> Kunstgewerbeschule<\/span> (now<\/span> the<\/span> University<\/span> of<\/span> Art<\/span> and<\/span> Design<\/span> Offenbach<\/span>) was<\/span> producing<\/span> many<\/span> remarkable<\/span> works<\/span> of<\/span> typography<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>

With this in mind, we founded the Klingspor Institute for Type Design in 2017 together with Marc Sch\u00fctz. The institute is a collaboration between HfG Offenbach and the Klingspor Museum, which has its origins in the former foundry. The institute's goal is to research the city's historical typographic heritage \u2013 specifically the archives of the Klingspor foundry\u00a0\u2013 and to make them more visible and accessible.<\/span> In addition to archival research and the digitization of the collection, the institute regularly organized courses, workshops, and lectures for HfG students. <\/span><\/span><\/p>

The corporate typeface we designed for the institute references the connection between historical material and contemporary type design. It is inspired by the \u00bbOffenbach\u00ab typeface, a hybrid font designed by Rudolf Koch for the Klingspor type foundry in the late 1920s.<\/span> Starting<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> original<\/span> capital<\/span> letter<\/span> forms<\/span>, we<\/span> expanded<\/span> the<\/span> character<\/span> set<\/span>, transforming<\/span> all<\/span> curves<\/span> into<\/span> polygonal<\/span> segments<\/span>. Through<\/span> this<\/span> look<\/span>, which<\/span> is<\/span> inspired<\/span> by<\/span> low<\/span>-resolution<\/span> screen<\/span> previews<\/span>, we<\/span> make<\/span> reference<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> digital<\/span> materiality<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> new<\/span> typeface<\/span>. Like<\/span> the<\/span> institute<\/span> as<\/span> a<\/span> whole<\/span>, the<\/span> design<\/span> combines<\/span> historical<\/span> material<\/span> with<\/span> a<\/span> digital<\/span> approach<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>
